Swim Legs

Most lower-limb prosthetics are not waterproof. As a result, it can be difficult for individuals living with limb-loss to participate in water-based activities like swimming and bathing. NEOPS set out to change that by becoming an industry leader in water-based prostheses, including swimming and shower legs. Waterproof legs are designed for an assortment of activities including:

  • Swimming

  • Bathing or showering

  • Beach days

  • Surfing

  • Sailing

The Fin

In 2017 NEOPS set out to do something that had never been done. In partnership with Northwell Health, NEOPS created the first-ever 3D-printed swimming prosthesis. Traditionally, swimming legs were not actually designed for swimming. They allowed wearers to walk or stand in water, but had no way of propelling wearers through the water while swimming. In fact, without a true swimming prosthesis on the market, most amputees choose to swim without a prosthesis at all.

The Fin, unlike traditional swimming legs, was actually designed for swimming, not just standing or walking in water.

With the Fin, amputees can walk into a pool or the ocean, swim, and then walk out again. That means no more walking to the edge of the pool and taking your leg off to swim!

We found that a true swimming prosthesis was unavailable.

We looked at the human needs beyond the health needs and achieved innovation at a different level: a human breakthrough. We believe this is an innovation for the future of all parents, athletes, amputees.

In March 2017, Dan Lasko, a 33-year-old Iraqi war veteran from Pennsylvania, entered the pool at Long Island’s Eisenhower Park for a first test of The Fin. A first of its kind, the custom-fitted 3D-printed prosthetic leg permits an amputee to go straight from land into the water and back.

For Dan, who only wanted to swim again with his kids, this remarkable 3D engineering is literally a life changer.
