Mastectomy can be an emotionally and physically devastating
ordeal for the patient, especially when one considers that finding
cancer, anywhere in the body, is already traumatic. A patient battling
cancer may find the prospect of loosing one or both breast terrifying.
Some women opt for reconstructive surgery right away,
but a significant number of others choose to use a prosthesis permanently
or temporarily. A patient many decide to use a prosthesis for a
variety of reasons including health related concerns.
Once
the decision to use a prosthesis is made and the surgical wound has
healed sufficiently, the patient can see a mastectomy fitter. Refitting
on an annual basis will probably be necessary due to the aging process
and fluctuations in weight.
